Hi,
I have recently had my 4k apart to fix the slow speeds, it was the sliding piece on top the body under the gears was sticking - now fixed.
The problem is I got wd40 everywhere & then had to clean all this off with IPA.
I think I have wiped the range finder spot, it is really faint now, & nearly impossible to see :-(
Please can someone tell me where it is, I didn't notice this till it was all back together, so can't look now without pulling it all apart again.
I had to remove the mirror (attached to the arm) in order to clean the glass in front of it - I'm not sure if this is where the problem lies??
Help!!
Thanks,
Colin

You have now learnt the very important lesson - Never let an aerosol can of lubricant near a camera, assembled or partly stripped. Spray the product into a container and use a dropper or brush.
The normal dodge used to increase the 'contrast' of a damaged rangefinder spot is to place a piece of 2x yellow gelatin filter into the light path. I think there is reference to this in the archive, but if you Google this I suspect that one of the rangefinder forums will provide actual details.

I have found Rik Oleson piece about using a small piece of insulating tape placed on the centre of the viewfinder window, I will try that Monday.

Well, the "patch" is in Zorki a half-silvered, cemented prism. Unless this assembly split - either the solvent attacked the cement, or it had a crack to start with - it should be okay. You might, however, have wasted the front-silvered mirror on the RF arm.

thanks Mareklew, thats where I suspected it was, & no wd40 went down the join, just some on the faces & looking through the vf is nice & clear still. The mirrored surface looked very good on the RF, however I have noticed the range finder is a bit out horizontally & vertically & wonder if bringing this back in will make a difference?

I took the top of again yesterday.
It turned out that it was just way out of alignment!
I didn't appreciate how much movement there was when screwing the rf arm back in place & never checked it till it was all back together - I was a mile out.
It's fine now :^}
Thanks for everyone's advice,
Colin
