I recently acquired some miscellaneous equipment and found a couple of mystery pieces. The first one (pictured) is obviously a shutter release. I screws into the cable release socket. Has anyone seen one of these before? I'm not really sure what purpose it serves. I thought it might be a "soft" shutter release, but when I tried it on my XE-5, it made no difference. I thought it might work with my XG-7, but you have to push very hard to get it to work. I have some Minolta literature, but I can't find any mention of this little button.
The second item in a shallow metal cap, with a 55mm internal thread. Any idea what it may be for?

I haven't a clue as to the shallow metal cap except that it could be used to stack 55mm threaded filters onto without having the bottom one damaged. The pictured item looks something like a soft release, but it doesn't look quite like other soft releases I've seen. Maybe it's a removable end for a factory cable release? Just a guess. |

The shallow metal cap is probably just that, a screw-on lens cap. I have one in I think 55mm also. Doesn't fall off like a plastic clip-on on does. |

If Mark and Brian combine their respective 'caps' they will have the complete accessory - top and bottom protectors to allow a stack of 55mm filters to be carried in pocket or bag. Not one of the most needed or useful accessories in my opinion, as if one drops the stack all the filter glasses can crack - some poor sod dropped a stack of 8 off the York City walls last summer, it landed not 10 feet from us and was well wrecked.
The shutter release button is just that, unfortunately I cannot recall the model it was originally marketed for. |

That's one bizarre shutter button, then. It doesn't look as if it would be much help at all except if you have massive fingers or heavy gloves on.
55mm would be perfect for a lot of older, pre-plain MD Minolta lens filters. I have a stack myself. Don't intend on dropping it, though. |

AFAIR it was one of those must-have bizarre accessory items for Arctic photogs with gloves on or otherwise bandaged trigger fingers. |

So it's basically a "can't miss" shutter button, not really a soft release button? |
