I have a 1971 Honeywell Auto Strobonar 115 but its battery seems dead (good for 2-3 flashes, then needs recharge) I would like to change it, but have no idea how to open the battery compartment, or dismantle unit.

Probably the (presumably rechargeable) batteries have simply expired, given that the unit is that old! Sometimes the old gear is usable, sometimes it just needs to be "retired" with diginity....

Sure it is problem with expired batteries (most probably old Ni-Cd kind).
However expired batteries can be changed for new ones, but I dont know how to open the body of the
flash - there are no screws, nor latches visible! If somebody have had similar problem, or a repair manual for the unit, I could open it, change battery and save it from retirement!

Squeeze the two horizontal tabs at the back of the head to unlock the battery comprtment. Inside you will find four Ni-Cad black batteries; they can be replaced. Initial recharge time will be about 18 hours and should be good for 80+/- flashes about every ten seconds.
